First Week Of Fall Peek At Our Week 3

This was the first day of Fall so we celebrated with an apple bar! Apple cider and apples to dip and mini apple pies! I also made apple cider bread but before I got a pic of it the kids had it almost gone so apparently it was pretty good!

Peek At Our Week 2

Week 2 done! It was a full week too with my boy starting his first job!!! YAY FOX!!!! I am so proud of him. I think just about everyone starts their first job at a fast food place!

I thought I would use this weeks post to go over what the kids will be doing for school or at least starting out because as they finish stuff things always change. Fox will be reading the entire series of the Uncle Eric books to learn about economics as well as the many many Izzit movies we own. He is going to study American Geography as well as Government. He is using Fox it Grammer by IEW. He is going through Math Refresher For adults just to see any spots he may need help on. He will also keep track of everything in his Thinking Tree Journal.

For science he will study scientist from the begininng and do experiments and projects based on their findings. We are reading Suffering Scientist by Horrible Science and using his Milestones in Science kit that he had never finished before because he had wanted to learn something else! I will say that has been a huge joy in home school, my kids having a say in their education and enjoying what they are learning about.

Back To School!!!!

We started our school year!!! Sadly no big party this year the time sort of snuck upon me and with working nights things just don't get planned! We still had a fun week going through what the coming school year would be about and having a not so scary ice cream party to celebrate the full moon and Friday the 13TH. I can't get over how big my kids are!

Since last year did not go as planned Fox will still be doing his senior year, which is no big deal since graduating last year was a year early anyway!

Peek At Our Week 30 Field Trip and Teen Academy

We got to start our week off with another field trip!!! My kids love field trips and I love the museums home school days. They are so hands on which is how my kids learn best and the people there are just so good with my kids. It was of course better since we got to take a friend again!

We started our trip at the butterfly rain forest. My kids have been here a few times but it always amazes them.

So many butterflies to see and they are literally everywhere!

Peek At Our Week 28

After a billion computer, camera and Internet issues I think I am finally back up and running! I think between me and all the kids the sickies have finally passed us along as well. Seems like one of us has been sick every other day for weeks and waiting for the computer parts to come in to repair this thing has been NO FUN! We are still moving right along waiting for summer break though! A few weeks ago Skyler informed me she is tired of forensic science and just don't want to do it anymore so we had to switch some stuff up for her and she is now learning all about the environment and how to make it better! I had to get her a kit, I mean I am science kit queen so of course she needed a kit!

Our Review of Fix It! Grammar Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)

Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)

I was so excited to have my son Fox use Fix it! Grammar by Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). Anything to do with Language Arts drives Fox bonkers. We have tried so many things and he absolutely hates everyone of them. Trying to teach him to diagram a sentence drove us both to tears so I was thrilled to give this program a shot with him. The lessons are short and to the point, only about fifteen minutes a day. The program is to be used four days a week. As with any other program though I am sure it is simple to fit it into your schedule.

It was wonderful to receive both the student book and teachers guide to the first book in the series, The Nose Tree. The teacher's manual does include a download link to print the student book. You could skip buying the preprinted version if you chose too.

Fox got started right away and had no issue doing it on his own after we discussed the way the program works and the expectations he was to meet. So this program also gets points for being independent. Fox is not a little kid any more and he truly don't like his mommy sitting over him to do school.

I chose the first book in the series since we had zero experience with the program. I had never even heard of it before. There is a placement test you can have your child complete though if you are unsure of the level to begin with. With Fox not liking any grammar program and always struggling book one was idea for him.

Our Review Of Memoria Press First Form Latin

My children have always had a curiosity about learning Latin. I think it comes from the Medieval time period being their favorite. The last language we had studied was Greek for my son so this time when we had the chance Skyler was all too happy to pick Latin! I was grateful to be given the chance to use the complete First Form Latin set by Memoria Press. I had a bit of Latin in Catholic School as a child but the majority of it is long forgotten. I knew using any Memoria Press program wouldn't be a problem for that though. Their programs are so complete that any parent can teach and learn alongside their child with no problem.

Memoria Press

First Form Latin is a beginners course. It is recommended for grades five and up so it was perfect for Skyler who is fourteen. This is a complete program as well and it includes all the things you will need for a successful year of learning Latin!

Peek At Our Week 17

Besides the Medieval Fair this week it was pretty boring around here. It seems like January and February are always the let down months. The holidays are over and school gets pretty routine and boring. Skyler did work quite a lot in her new grammar journal this week though. I am so thrilled she still loves her journals!

Field Trip!!!!!

It's here, it's here, IT IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!! The day we wait for all year long is here finally! The Medieval Fair has come and for one day we step back in time to an amazing world. This is the day we talk about in our house more than any other. We spend months finding the perfect dress for Princess Skyler and remembering all the past years of the fair and wonder what we will see and do this year. We can't wait to see all the familiar faces, learn arts long forgotten by most and eat our favorite food! For one day every single year I can count on everything being perfect. We will all run around like children seeing what is next to see. I can always count on this day being the best day of the whole year.

Peek At Our Week 16

This week in Fox was suppose to be making an orange sponge cake. This week we realized it is very important that you read the entire recipe and watch what you are doing... It started off a bit rough when we realized we needed a special pan called a tube pan. We didn't have one and no way to go get one right then and there. We researched online and people stated they had used a loaf pan and it turned out fine. Great!! We had two of those so perfect! It would all work out, right...???

I have taught Fox over and over how to separate the egg yolks from the egg whites and no matter what if I do not stand over him I catch him using his hand!! GRRRRRRR. Gross!!! I am in no way a chef but an actual chef did teach me how to do that so it gets frustrating when my child won't listen! I guess he will go his own way like everyone else though and hopefully do better in time!!

Peek At Our Week 14

This girl is already on her second grammar book for the year!!! She adores her Thinking Tree books! What a way to start the new year, in new jammies and with a new book.

Fox is still moving right along in Guest Hollow Chemistry in the Kitchen. This week he made cheesecake. This is my all time favorite cake of course. His did get a bit brown but it still tasted delicious.
