Our Review of Carole P. Roman Books

We were so excited to receive these books by this amazing author! I had never even heard of Carole P. Roman before now but as soon as I saw the books I just knew they would be a perfect fit for the girls! I am so grateful to have been shown these books. She was so kind by sending us three books to read and review. Carole has a few different series available so I am sure you can find one to match with your child's interests. We of course chose books from the If You Were Me And Lived In....Historical Series. These books are geared towards ages 8-15. My children all enjoy history books but sometimes they are so hard to find. Most history books read like a dry text so when I can scout out books like these I tend to get a bit excited!

My children are all very visual as well so the illustrations in these books were a major plus. Even though my kids are older they all enjoy beautiful art work that gets harder and harder to find in books for them that are not picture books. These are beautiful books!

These are the three books we received to enjoy together and enjoy we sure did! Skyler has read all three books at this point on her own she is 13 and Rhyli has gotten to read one of them. Both of the girls enjoyed these books greatly!

If You Were Me And Lived In...The Mayan Empire is a packed book. It is full of information about this time period. Rhyli had never even heard of the Mayan Empire before so it was a real interest to her. It has so many details of the daily life of the Mayan inside it. She felt like she was reading a story that was interesting and fun not reading a history book. This is what I aim for in my home school. I aim for my kids to see that learning is fun not boring and these books do not disappoint in any way. They are written in a story telling way as well as visually appealing.

If You Were Me And Lived In... The Ancient Mali Empire was of course another win as well. We have not really touched on this topic before so it was very interesting for Skyler to read. She has learned about Africa before but not too much of the history so she was happy with this book. As usual one of the most interesting things was learning about the food! My children have a thing about learning anything to do with food. She also really enjoys reading about what people did before we had certain luxuries such as electricity or grocery stores.

If You Were Me And Lived in...The Middle Ages was by far Skylers favorite book. This is the time period my kids always go back too. This book was just a joy for her. She has read many books on this time period but she told me this is her new favorite! The descriptions of the clothing, the daily life, and the illustrations really grabbed her attention. She just loved it. She also enjoyed reading from the point of view as a girl in the story because so many books on this time period concentrate on the boys, the knights and the wars. This was fun for her. Learning names she could have had at that time was another enjoyable moment for her as well.

As usual she has to have pictures of her goodies!

Rhyli enjoying reading about the Mayans!

Skyler had her cuddle cat all ready to read!

While these books are not long they are wonderful sources of enjoyment (and learning) for kids. They even include a glossary in the backs of the books for new words. I find this as a plus. So many times in history you read about something you don't quite know what it is, and then to really understand you have to put down the book and look it up. Having a glossary in he back takes all of that away! Skyler is 13 and had no issue reading the books in one sitting. Rhyli as well read it in one afternoon, then she was at my shelves looking for more!

This is what I love about great books, when they get a child's attention so well they want to seek even more information! These are wonderful books for kids of all ages. I even enjoyed reading through the middle ages book myself! All of the books give great detail about the different periods. They learn about daily life, medicine, clothing, food and just so much more! I would highly recommend these books to any parent for their history or even geography studies!
